Hello NLS families, hope everyone had a great weekend.  Today we: learned two new math games (still working on a variety of "Power of Ten" games) and had time to practice and play. did a task about "elaborative writing" - we learned more about how to add detail to our work, and then we practiced writing with elaborative detail.  wrapped up our work with the novel "The Jumbies" - we read a picture book and also looked at the questions we answered way back before we even started reading the book.  started a new task in social studies - we are now learning about the provinces and territories in Canada!  had a fire drill this afternoon Reminders: Parent-Teacher Conferences - This Thursday, November 25th 2021 (in the evening) and Friday, November 26th 2021 (in the morning and early afternoon - so, there is NO SCHOOL this Friday, as we will be doing conferences). Hello all NLS families, happy Friday! Today was a busy day, we: learned several new Power of Ten math games (today we were working on doubling) had gym! played literacy games did our "Jumbies Review" - students had to give a brief summary/hook of the novel and then answer 5 questions about the book. We recorded these on "Flip Grid" - they look awesome so far.  Reminders: Conferences are next week (Thursday, November 25th in the evening and Friday, November 26th in the morning and early afternoon). You should have, or receive an email soon regarding booking! Book fair starts on Monday, November 22nd - it is all virtual this year! Hello all - happy Thursday!  Today we:  started to learn about using whole numbers in estimation! We talked about why estimation is useful, strategies we can use to estimate and did some questions together as a class.  Tomorrow, we will practice some questions with estimating sums (estimation with adding).  continued to work towards finishing up our Wetland Creatures stories/artwork - many students are done typing the good copies of their stories and working on the artwork part of this project.  finished our read-aloud novel - The Jumbies! We have been reading this novel for about 6 weeks! It was very suspenseful and students worked hard to make predictions during the story, and also, we sketched/took key points down for each chapter as we worked on determining importance.  Next, we will work on creating (and recording on FlipGrid) our own novel reviews! also had gym today! continued to finish up both our social studies natural resources tasks and our science wetlands adaptations tasks

Hello NLS families! Today we:  worked on our Wetland Creatures stories! Most students are done the good copies and are now working on the art for this! The art will be the "cover" of our stories. They all look great so far! worked on whole-numbers in math - we did some review questions as a class, and also did a small check-in, so Ms. Clark can see where we are with our understanding.  read more of our novel "The Jumbies" - we only have 3 more chapters to read and that will be the end of the book! We will do individual reviews of the novel when we are done.  As well, this is the first book in a series, and many students have said they would like to read the next 2 books in the series - our school library doesn't have them (yet- we've asked to order them) but the Calgary Public Library does, if you want to check them out. Hello all! Today was a busy day. We: continued to work on our Wetland Creatures Stories! Everyone is working on either the good copy of their story OR working on their artwork for the cover of their story.  listened to 3 more chapters of our class novel, "The Jumbies" - we are in the final chapters of the book - we only have 5 more to go, and we will finish this up this week! Then we will do our book reviews.  continued to work on our social studies task about Natural Resources in Canada - more information can be found on google classroom if needed.  had music!  had health - we were continuing to talk about safety at home, at school, in the community and when taking part in recreational activities.  worked more on whole numbers in math - we are still practicing expanded, standard and word forms, as well as identifying place value, etc. We worked on lots of questions discussing and practicing this! Reminders: Remember to dress for the weather! Students go out for both recesses

Hello NLS families - hope you all had a wonderful long weekend!  This week is a full 5 day week! Lots that we are currently doing in class.  Today we: continued to work on our Wetland Creatures Stories (everyone is working on their typing their good copies - our goal is to finish these stories up later this week).  had our second "Trickster's Theater" virtual workshop - today we wrote a story about a desert location and a man on a camel! We learned different ways and strategies to create interesting and creative stories!  continued to work on our social studies mini project about natural resources (you can see more about this task on our google classroom) - we should be finishing this project up tomorrow in class.  had P.E. also continued to practice using whole numbers by representing and describing them!  Hello NLS Families, This short week is flying by! Today we: read more of our read-aloud novel "The Jumbies" - we are starting to get close to the end of the book (about 12 chapters to go)! It's getting quite intense and we aren't sure what will happen next, but lots of people are making predictions.  worked on the editing and good copies of our Wetland Creature Stories - we will continue to work on this tomorrow and into next week we had music and P.E.!  continued to work on whole numbers in math and using the 3 ways we can represent and describe numbers - standard (93 245), expanded (90 000 + 3 000 + 200 + 40 + 5) and word form (ninety-three thousand two hundred forty-five). We learned all three ways represent the same value, but we can express the numbers in many ways. we also talked about safety in health class. Today we: worked on editing our Wetland Creatures stories (we are doing both self and peer edits) - we will finish edits and then begin Good Copies! had an "in class virtual field trip"with Tricker's Theatre! We got to learn about different ways to tell stories! Happy Friday! Today we: worked on our Wetland Creature Stories! Most students finished their rough copy - and many are so close! On Monday, we will go over editing and do both self and peer edits. After that, we will work on the good copies (typed on Chrome Books) and artwork to go along with our story! We also read and played Literacy Games today too! had Phys. Hello all, Today we: started to discuss parts of Remembrance Day and learned about Cree Code Talkers in World War II. We read a story, an article and watched a video about this. We discussed lots about how this indigenous contribution to the war was very important! Tomorrow and next week, we will continue to learn and discuss about Remembrance Day.  continued to work on the rough copies of our wetland creature stories. Some students are done the rough copy, and others are still working on it. Hello NLS families, Today we: continued to work on our rough copies of our wetland stories. Hopefully students will finish up on the next few days, then we will move onto editing. continued to learn more about Natural Resources found in Canada. We started a visual journal page about our research. This task can be found on Google Classroom - it is NOT homework though- we will continue to work on this over the next few social studies classes - but you can look at your child’s Google Classroom for more, if you are curious  continued to learn about whole numbers and place value today. We practiced and took up questions today - focusing on standard form, expanded form, and word form. Hello Grade 5 families, hope your week is going well! Today we: read about plants and animals (and their wetland adaptations) with a partner. The information is on google classroom if you want to see more about the task - it is NOT homework, we will be continuing to work on this in class. working on whole numbers (we were mainly reviewing concepts regarding place value - ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands and millions - and also we discussed ways to record numbers properly, so that place value is correct). We will be continuing to work on this! Ask me if I can correctly read the number 452 534 (and if I can say what column the hundreds would be!) continued to read and write about The Jumbies - ask me what happened in our novel today! also continued to talk about natural resources (what does natural resources mean, and what are some examples?), and also talked about how they impact where and how people live.  Reminders: Picture Orders - due by November 9th
