 Hello NLS Families,

This short week is flying by! Today we:

  • read more of our read-aloud novel "The Jumbies" - we are starting to get close to the end of the book (about 12 chapters to go)! It's getting quite intense and we aren't sure what will happen next, but lots of people are making predictions. 
  • worked on the editing and good copies of our Wetland Creature Stories - we will continue to work on this tomorrow and into next week
  • we had music and P.E.! 
  • continued to work on whole numbers in math and using the 3 ways we can represent and describe numbers - standard (93 245), expanded (90 000 + 3 000 + 200 + 40 + 5) and word form (ninety-three thousand two hundred forty-five). We learned all three ways represent the same value, but we can express the numbers in many ways.
  • we also talked about safety in health class.
Reminders: 
  • Remembrance Day Ceremony - Wednesday, November 10th 2021 (in the morning at approx. 10:30am)
  • Northern Lights School would like to ask all students and staff to bring a toonie for a poppy as part of our fundraiser for the poppy fund. You can bring the money in for the poppy anytime this week. Thank you very much!
  • NO SCHOOL - on Thursday, November 11th 2021 (CBE is closed on Remembrance Day)
  • NO SCHOOL - on Friday, November 12th 2021 (it is a PD Day, Staff are at schools, but no students) - we will see you all back in school on Monday, November 15th 2021!

Hello NLS families - hope you all had a wonderful long weekend!  This week is a full 5 day week! Lots that we are currently doing in class.  Today we: continued to work on our Wetland Creatures Stories (everyone is working on their typing their good copies - our goal is to finish these stories up later this week).  had our second "Trickster's Theater" virtual workshop - today we wrote a story about a desert location and a man on a camel! We learned different ways and strategies to create interesting and creative stories!  continued to work on our social studies mini project about natural resources (you can see more about this task on our google classroom) - we should be finishing this project up tomorrow in class.  had P.E. also continued to practice using whole numbers by representing and describing them! Hello and welcome to October! Today we: played Literacy Games during our Literacy Block Centres (Literacy Games are only played on Fridays) had gym! We played a version of 4 corners and also fruit salad tag had an assembly to kick off "Field Study Fridays" - it was a virtual smudge ceremony and then we went on a short walking field trip to do our land offering. When we got back we did a small reflection on this.  had lots of time to read and play math games to practice our basic math facts Reminders: Orange Shirt Day Ceremony Hearts are going home today- please be careful when unpacking your backpacks tonight/this weekend! The hearts can be placed outside (e.g., front porch, front steps, maybe into a garden in the front - or wherever it fits for your family). The idea is to show that we are supportive and welcoming! The hearts are made of concrete, so they should be fairly strong.

Hello, and welcome to the end of another busy week here at NLS! Today we: played BBQ tag in P.E. continued to work on art (our "what if everybody did that" project) - we are all working on our good copies or have just finished! learned about everyone's culture - today was Culture Day, so lots of students shared about their families! celebrated our first week with the Kindness Jar! Ask me about it this weekend!
