Friday, October 29th 2021

Happy Friday! Today we:  played bench ball in Phys. Ed. read a new chapter of "The Jumbies" - it was a really exciting chapter, we learned that the main character Corrine (and her friends) found out that Severine might be a jumbie! Ask me about what is happening! did a reading task played literacy games  started to learn about numbers all the way to 1 million! Reminders: Have a happy and safe halloween (if you celebrate)! See you all on Monday!

Hi NLS families, happy Thursday! Today we: read 2 chapters from The Jumbies and did lots of predicting! had music and gym! continued to work on our wetland creatures planning and stories Reminders: Halloween -  TOMORROW on Friday, October 29th students can dress in "black and orange" or wear costumes, if they want. We have been talking about what kind of "appropriate" costumes would be allowed (no fake blood, masks, fake weapons, etc). Mrs. Brinson has also sent out information regarding costumes. Please give that a read! Ask if you have any other questions. Thanks! 🎃 The weather is about to get much colder and snowier! Please make sure your child has warm outdoor gear (jacket, hat, gloves/mitts, boots, and maybe even snow pants)! Students are going outside everyday for AM recess (15 min) and Lunch Recess (25 min), as well as some other outdoor activities (possibly gym, science, and other things like Field Studies Fridays). Hello everyone! Sorry for the late blog posting, I thought it had published right after school! Today we: learned about natural resources  did a math assessment on transformations played a halloween dodgeball game in P.E. worked on our story plans! Reminders: Halloween -  on Friday, October 29th students can dress in "black and orange" or wear costumes, if they want. We have been talking about what kind of "appropriate" costumes would be allowed (no fake blood, masks, fake weapons, etc). Mrs. Brinson has also sent out information regarding costumes. Reminder for Families

  NORTHERN LIGHTS SCHOOL VIRTUAL PUMPKIN PATCH / FALL FAMILY FUN VIDEO    Get your family together and join in the fun for our NLS Virtual Pumpkin Patch / Fall Family Fun video.  Design, carve or dress up a pumpkin and take a photo of it with your family.  Or, do other fun fall activities with the family and capture them in a picture.  Activities could include sitting by a fire, raking leaves, drinking hot chocolate, going for a fall walk, etc.   Email your photos to Mrs. Brinson at  mlbrinson@cbe.ab.ca  before Thursday morning so she can put together a video. Once the video is created and a link will be sent out to our families.

Happy Friday! Today we: played literacy games and did independent reading! worked on our "Just So Stories" - we are currently working on the planning stage of our stories! Next week after a bit more planning we will start our rough copies. At this point, students have picked a title, a setting, a main character, supporting characters, and are working at identifying a problem for the story.  reviewed everything we've learned about transformations, and did a lot of practice today too! We will be having one final assessment next week before we switch units!  had gym! Hi there! Happy Thursday. Today we: played dodgeball/benchball in gym had music continued to practice reflections, translations and rotations (we are just about done our unit). Today we used tracing paper to check our work! read the story "Explorers in the Wild" and practiced our listening/inferring skills. We then had to retell the story with a partner and then by using "flipgrid" - ask me about it tonight! talked about living and non-living things in science, and what humans impact on wetlands/the environment could be. Everyone had 1 question they had to think about for homework - how can humans impact wetlands in a positive way?

Hello NLS families, Today we: started to learn about food chains and played a game outside about them! You could have been a producer, a herbivore, a carnivore or a decomposer. had gym outside - we plated tag and practiced passing  continued to review rotations in math  read 2 chapters of "The Jumbies" - we have been making lots of predictions!  had picture day started the planning of our stories

Hello NLS families, Hope you all had a great long weekend! Today we: learned all about reading strategies. continued to practice rotations in math class and also learned a new math game. did our health presentations and learned lots about our classmates! We also did a reflection after about things we learned. had music today! read chapter 3 of our read aloud novel "The Jumbies" - ask me about the story so far!  Reminders: Picture Day is tomorrow (Wednesday October 20th 2021). Take Me Outside day is tomorrow (Wednesday October 20th 2021) - please make sure you are dressed to participate in an outdoor activity tomorrow afternoon.

Happy Friday NLS Families! Today we: played bench ball (with a focus on catching) in PE did a math practice about transformations (reflections, translations and rotations) - we have been practicing these for a number of weeks now and will start to move onto other math topics in the next few weeks.  worked on our health projects (see below for more information) walking field trip - we looked at water samples and made t-charts about living and non living things: Reminders: No School on Monday, October 18th 2021 - it is a PD day. For our next health class (on Tuesday, October 19th 2021) students will need to bring in an item (of their choosing) that is really important to them or helps to describe who they are as a person. They have each picked an item already to bring in and planned what they will say. We will be sharing these pictures/items on TUESDAY! Picture Day on Wednesday, October 20th 2021

Hello everyone,  Today we: learned about living and non-living things in Alberta wetlands (we will use this information on our walking field trip tomorrow! learned about rotations in math continued to read "The Jumbies!" and sketch in our Visual Journals used textbooks to look at maps of Canada, learned about the Compass Rose and we used sticky notes to guess about places/landforms/bodies of water in Canada (Ms. Clark did a rough sketch of Canada and we guessed important aspects of Canada and then placed them on the map) Reminders Picture Day - next Wednesday! Wednesday October 13th 2012

Hi there!  Today we: got to go to the park, it is officially open now! Grade 5 days to play at the park are Tuesdays and Thursdays!  reviewed rotations, reflections and translations. Then, we had to answer 3 reflection questions made up by a classmate  started new novel called "The Jumbies" - we don't know a lot about it yet (we only read 1 chapter) but it has something to do with an old story told to kids. The main characters name is Corrine and she is 11. Ms. Clark is reading the story to us. finished our wetlands venn diagrams  started to talk and plan our new story project in Language Arts! More info to come soon! Reminders Walking field trip to the Coventry Hills Village Pond on Friday, October 15th 2021 Don't forget to dress for the weather, it's getting colder out!

Happy Tuesday - Hope everyone had a great long weekend!  Today we:  continued to practice reflections in math class and made our own questions for a partner to solve tomorrow! We also played "splat" as a warm up! went over the new Playground rules! The playground should be open tomorrow, fingers crossed!   also went over some school rules - like what to do about recycling and appropriate hallway, bathroom or school behaviour  had gym and music today! Reminders: Dress for the weather - everyone needs indoor/outdoor shoes, jackets, hats etc! It's definitely getting chilly out!    Picture Day - Wednesday October 20th 2021 We are going on a Walking Field Trip to Coventry Hills Village Pond on Friday, October 15th 2021 for Field Studies Friday and to learn more about wetlands (our current science unit) Health - today we started talking about presentations (how to be a great presenter and how to be a great audience member)! Next week we are doing an "about me" present

Hello NLS Families, hope you all had a great Wednesday! Today we: continued to work on our storyboards in Language Arts made a math visual journal page about translations and reflections learned about the 5 types of wetlands found in Alberta and compared/contrasted 2 of them on a venn diagram. had music!  Reminders: No School on Friday, October 8th 2021 (PD day) and there is also no school on Monday, October 11th 2021 (Thanksgiving Monday). School will resume on Tuesday, October 12th 2021.

Hi there! Today we: talked about gratitude - what it means and what we are grateful for learned more about wetlands (animals that live there and types of wetlands) practiced what to do during a fire drill (follow up to yesterday's fire drill) worked on our Reading Response Journals - tomorrow we are handing in our first journal entries!  learned about reflections in math, and discussed different ways to make the number 24! Monday, October 4th 2021

Hello! Hope everyone had a nice weekend!  Today we:  had a fire drill in the afternoon to practice how to safely evaluate the building in the event of a fire - our class goal is to be more quiet next time - we will be practicing before our next fire drill as we are the leaders of the school, and the younger grades look up to us!  created storyboards for the story called "how the rabbit got his long ears" - we are retelling the important parts on the story board set goals in health class - ask me about mine!  continued to work on translations in math  Reminders: No School on Friday, October 8th 2021 (it is a PD day for teachers )and there is also no school on Monday, October 11th 2021 (it is Thanksgiving Monday). School will resume on Tuesday, October 12th 2021. As the weather gets colder, please ensure you are dressed for the weather (including jackets, hats, mitts, boots, etc. if needed) - students go out for AM recess, lunch recess, outdoor learning and even P.E. sometimes.

Hello and welcome to October! Today we: played Literacy Games during our Literacy Block Centres (Literacy Games are only played on Fridays) had gym! We played a version of 4 corners and also fruit salad tag had an assembly to kick off "Field Study Fridays" - it was a virtual smudge ceremony and then we went on a short walking field trip to do our land offering. When we got back we did a small reflection on this.  had lots of time to read and play math games to practice our basic math facts Reminders: Orange Shirt Day Ceremony Hearts are going home today- please be careful when unpacking your backpacks tonight/this weekend! The hearts can be placed outside (e.g., front porch, front steps, maybe into a garden in the front - or wherever it fits for your family). The idea is to show that we are supportive and welcoming! The hearts are made of concrete, so they should be fairly strong.
