Hello all,

Today we:

  • started to discuss parts of Remembrance Day and learned about Cree Code Talkers in World War II. We read a story, an article and watched a video about this. We discussed lots about how this indigenous contribution to the war was very important! Tomorrow and next week, we will continue to learn and discuss about Remembrance Day. 
  • continued to work on the rough copies of our wetland creature stories. Some students are done the rough copy, and others are still working on it. We will start editing on Monday, and then work on good copies after that - which we will be typing on the ChromeBooks, and also using art to represent our wetland creature.
  • we had music today.
  • learned a new math game called "concentration" - we are learning lots of different math games right now!
  • continued to learn about place value and representing and describing whole numbers in math - no decimals yet (we will tackle that later on). The main ways of representing and describing numbers (as well as being comfortable in understanding what a number means) are in the following ways - standard form, expanded form, in word form, or in a place value chart. Below I have an example (and there is another example in yesterday's blog post as well).

  • Remembrance Day Ceremony - Wednesday November 10th 2021(in the morning)
  • No School - Thursday, November 11th 2021 (for Remembrance Day) 
  • EDIT- NO school on Friday, November 12th 2021- I had originally typed this wrong- my apologies! This is a PD day for teachers. I will reconfirm with students tomorrow and add this into tomorrow blog post. Sorry! 
  • Book orders went home yesterday (if you want to order- it is totally optional).

Hello NLS families - hope you all had a wonderful long weekend!  This week is a full 5 day week! Lots that we are currently doing in class.  Today we: continued to work on our Wetland Creatures Stories (everyone is working on their typing their good copies - our goal is to finish these stories up later this week).  had our second "Trickster's Theater" virtual workshop - today we wrote a story about a desert location and a man on a camel! We learned different ways and strategies to create interesting and creative stories!  continued to work on our social studies mini project about natural resources (you can see more about this task on our google classroom) - we should be finishing this project up tomorrow in class.  had P.E. also continued to practice using whole numbers by representing and describing them! Hello, and welcome to the end of another busy week here at NLS! Today we: played BBQ tag in P.E. continued to work on art (our "what if everybody did that" project) - we are all working on our good copies or have just finished! learned about everyone's culture - today was Culture Day, so lots of students shared about their families! celebrated our first week with the Kindness Jar! Ask me about it this weekend! Hello and welcome to October! Today we: played Literacy Games during our Literacy Block Centres (Literacy Games are only played on Fridays) had gym! We played a version of 4 corners and also fruit salad tag had an assembly to kick off "Field Study Fridays" - it was a virtual smudge ceremony and then we went on a short walking field trip to do our land offering. When we got back we did a small reflection on this.  had lots of time to read and play math games to practice our basic math facts Reminders: Orange Shirt Day Ceremony Hearts are going home today- please be careful when unpacking your backpacks tonight/this weekend! The hearts can be placed outside (e.g., front porch, front steps, maybe into a garden in the front - or wherever it fits for your family). The idea is to show that we are supportive and welcoming! The hearts are made of concrete, so they should be fairly strong.
