Hello there! Today was a busy day for our class! We: learned more about Orange Shirt Day and the TRC's 94 Calls to Action. We then decorated hearts as a part of this lesson. We will be using these hearts tomorrow in the Orange Shirt Day Ceremony. went on a walking field trip to the Coventry Hills Village Pond and we had to sketch and observe things while we were there. used "boom whackers" in music class. Reminders Tomorrow (Wednesday, September 29th 2021) is Orange Shirt Day - There will be a ceremony for students in the morning. Please wear an orange shirt if you have one. Remember, this is a solemn ceremony and not like a typical assembly where there is cheering, clapping, etc. Please remember to be quiet, respectful and follow instructions!  No School Thursday September 30th 2021 - for Orange Shirt Day - there IS school on Friday.  Walking Field Trip - Friday October 1st (For Field Study Friday) - we will be placing our offering on this walk. Happy Monday!  Today we: played wax museum and tag games in the gym learned more about residential schools and watched a video about orange shirt day. In ELA we did independent reading, literacy block and continued to work on our storytelling of "How the Rabbit got it's Long Ears" (we are building tasks in with this story) also learned about the "power of ten" in math and started practicing some math games and we also worked more on transformations Reminders:  Walking Field Trip - Tomorrow morning! On September 29th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. Hello NLS families,  Today we: had the Terry Fox run! Our class ran 182 laps total, which is equal to just over 60km and we raised $82.00 from our class! continued to work on transformations in math class learned all about maps, Canada, the earth and space (intro to our geography unit), and we learned how to use a textbook (features of a non-fiction text, including: table of contents, index, glossary, maps/legends/compass rose/elevations/scale)- next week we will dive into Canadian geography more in depth! Hello! Hope you all had a great Wednesday.  Today we: in P.E. we played a game called "treasure island" learned about and practiced: reflections, rotations, translations  in math class!  we read the story of "how the rabbit got it's long ears" and we talked about descriptions, setting and visualizing while we listen to/read stories started RRJs (reading response journals) - we will work on them in class (as we read) and hand them in for Ms. Clark to read every other week.  Reminders: Tomorrow (Thursday, September 23rd) is the Terry Fox Run! You can still bring in any donations (or donate online - see previous email regarding this)! So far our class has raised over $60.00 for cancer research. Our whole school goal was $1000.00. Additionally, as the run is tomorrow, please make sure to dress appropriately for the weather - the run will be taking place outside tomorrow morning. Today we: played BBQ tag in P.E. continued to work on art (our "what if everybody did that" project) - we are all working on our good copies or have just finished! learned about everyone's culture - today was Culture Day, so lots of students shared about their families! celebrated our first week with the Kindness Jar! Hello NLS Families! Today was an exciting day for our Grade 5 classes as we went on a walk to Nose Creek Park ! Students were able to observe a wetlands area, and sketch the area and make a few jot notes about what they saw.  It was a great morning! We will further discuss this tomorrow when we continue to learn about wetlands in science class.

Hi NLS Families, Today 5A: had our first day of music, ask me about it! started to learn about wetlands for science  we played literacy games and read for 11 minutes (we are building up our reading stamina) played math battleship and learned about tangrams  Key information for Grade 5 families: Thursday, September 16th 5A will be going on a walk to Nose Creek Park for Wetland observations (our new science unit)! Please dress appropriately for the weather. We will be going in the morning, first thing!  Culture Day is this Friday! A School Messenger went out yesterday with more information regarding donations, etc. Bring books from home - we are beginning daily independent reading, and students can either read a book from our classroom library, bring a book from home, or soon, will be able to sign out books from the LC

Hello! Welcome to the new blog! This is just a reminder that from now on each grade 5 class will be having its own blog to simplify things.  Today we: - had our first fire drill of the year, ask me how it went! - learned about graphs and how to play math battleship! - started independent daily reading  - got all of our journals and duotangs and organized our bins. Key Information for Grade 5 families: - On Thursday, September 16th the 3 Grade 5 classes will be walking to Nose Creek Park for our Wetlands Science unit. -Families will receive a school messenger update today regarding the 2021 Terry Fox Run - please refer to that email for more information! The run will take place September 23rd 2021. If you wish to donate you can do so online or your child can bring cash to school for "Toonies for Terry"! - Bring book from home (if you want to)! We will be doing independent reading every morning and students can bring a book from home if they choose to. There are some classroom
