Hello!

Welcome to the new blog! This is just a reminder that from now on each grade 5 class will be having its own blog to simplify things. 

Today we:

- had our first fire drill of the year, ask me how it went!

- learned about graphs and how to play math battleship!

- started independent daily reading 

- got all of our journals and duotangs and organized our bins.

Key Information for Grade 5 families:

- On Thursday, September 16th the 3 Grade 5 classes will be walking to Nose Creek Park for our Wetlands Science unit.

-Families will receive a school messenger update today regarding the 2021 Terry Fox Run - please refer to that email for more information! The run will take place September 23rd 2021. If you wish to donate you can do so online or your child can bring cash to school for "Toonies for Terry"!

- Bring book from home (if you want to)! We will be doing independent reading every morning and students can bring a book from home if they choose to. There are some classroom library books to choose from as well, and we will be able to go the Learning Commons soon, where students will be able to sign out books to read on a weekly basis.

- Culture Day Info - see below!


This year, we are also asking that families please write down a greeting in the language they speak at home. For example, “Hello” “Hola” “Benvenuto” “Bonjour”. OR, if your family has another greeting or gesture, please include this as well. Students will bring their greeting back to school and will write it on a special piece of paper to be displayed!

Hello NLS families - hope you all had a wonderful long weekend!  This week is a full 5 day week! Lots that we are currently doing in class.  Today we: continued to work on our Wetland Creatures Stories (everyone is working on their typing their good copies - our goal is to finish these stories up later this week).  had our second "Trickster's Theater" virtual workshop - today we wrote a story about a desert location and a man on a camel! We learned different ways and strategies to create interesting and creative stories!  continued to work on our social studies mini project about natural resources (you can see more about this task on our google classroom) - we should be finishing this project up tomorrow in class.  had P.E. also continued to practice using whole numbers by representing and describing them! Friday, October 1st 2021

Hello and welcome to October! Today we: played Literacy Games during our Literacy Block Centres (Literacy Games are only played on Fridays) had gym! We played a version of 4 corners and also fruit salad tag had an assembly to kick off "Field Study Fridays" - it was a virtual smudge ceremony and then we went on a short walking field trip to do our land offering. When we got back we did a small reflection on this.  had lots of time to read and play math games to practice our basic math facts Reminders: Orange Shirt Day Ceremony Hearts are going home today- please be careful when unpacking your backpacks tonight/this weekend! The hearts can be placed outside (e.g., front porch, front steps, maybe into a garden in the front - or wherever it fits for your family). The idea is to show that we are supportive and welcoming! The hearts are made of concrete, so they should be fairly strong.

Hello, and welcome to the end of another busy week here at NLS! Today we: played BBQ tag in P.E. continued to work on art (our "what if everybody did that" project) - we are all working on our good copies or have just finished! learned about everyone's culture - today was Culture Day, so lots of students shared about their families! celebrated our first week with the Kindness Jar! Ask me about it this weekend!
